In a win for election integrity (and hopefully for Kari Lake and other GOP candidates) an Arizona Superior Court judge in Maricopa County has ruled that the very weak signature verification process used in the county for mail-in ballots in the last election was unlawful as it was not sufficient to determine if the signature on the ballot was actually that of the voter. Thousands of ballots are involved. Maricopa County is the state's largest county, and the one which has seen multiple lawsuits after the last election over questionable election practices. It is too early to tell how this will ultimately impact the challenges of GOP candidates for governor, attorney general, and secretary of state, who narrowly lost due to the questionable ballots. The judge's ruling is certain to be appealed.

Mail-in ballots are even more problematic than voting machines, although both open elections up to fraud. When Jimmy Carter chaired that federal commission on election procedures after the 2000 elections, they pointed out the potential for fraud in mail-in voting and recommended reducing that voting method. Instead, the Democrats in 2016, looking for ways to manipulate the elections, greatly expanded it. Bad signature verificiation, as happened many places, just made fraud easier. There was no way to really tell who marked the ballots or sent them in.
