French right wins landslide in Senate election | Eastern NC Now

147 out of 170 seats won by right

ENCNow

The French right has won a landslide in France's Senate election, which this cycle filled half of the 340 overall seats.  Of the 170 seats up for election, the traditional conservative Les Republicains and their allies won 144, and the populist / nationalist anti-immigration National Rally won 3.  This was the first time that the National Rally had won more than one seat.  Most of the remainder went to the globalist / centrist parties backing President Macron.  The largest party of the left in the lower house, France Unbowed, failed to win any Senate seats this election.  The right has a solid majority in France's Senate.

The last election for the lower house failed to give Macron a majority there either, but his forces have fared even worse in the senate.

Macron's recent suggestion of an amnesty for over a hundred thousand illegal aliens probably did not help his candidates in this election. It is good that they took it on the chin.
