anti-immigration, anti-woke coalition gov't formed in Slovakia | Eastern NC Now

follows populist nationalist parties win in parliamentary election

ENCNow

As expected, after the win by populist / nationalist parties in Slovakia's parliamentary election, the three populist / nationalist parties have formed a governing coalition. All are nationalist / euroskeptic, anti-immigration, and anti-woke.  The parties do have some variations in approach to economic policy and foreign policy.

Leading the coalition government is the Smer Party of former Prime Minister Robert Fico, whose ideology is a mish-mash of positions of the right and left, but leans left on economic policy.  It strongly supports national identity and national authority and resists giving up power to the EU.  In the campaign, it particularly stressed its opposition to allowing illegal immigration and to the woke transgender ideology.

The other parties in the coalition, are Hlas, a breakaway from Smer that has much the same agenda, and the Slovak National Party, a populist / nationalist party of the right that shares much of the agenda of their partners but has significant differences on economic policy.

In announcing the new coalition, Fico announced that its goal would be to protect Slovakia's national interests.

Sitting in opposition in parliament will be the traditional conservative Ordinary Peoples Party, the leftwing Progressive Slovakia, the libertarian conservative Freedom and Solidarity Party, and the center-right Christian Democrats.

There is a real trend in Europe of voters turning to parties which want to stop the mass invasion by illegal alien migrants who call themselves "asylum seekers" although most of them know they do not qualify for asylum. That trend is also strong among voters in Germany and Austria.

What is interesting is that trend is also moving to the left as well, as shown by Smer and Hlas which are mixed bags ideologically. Germany may get even more interesting, as the far left Left Party's most popular leader has resigned and many believe she is on the verge of launching a populist anti-woke, anti-immigration party of the left in that country, which would smash the Left Party and seriously undercut the Social Democrats according to polls.
