Mary Jo Dixon Guthrie Latham | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Mary Jo Dixon Guthrie Latham, age 79, a resident of Washington, NC died peacefully Saturday November 25, 2023 at her home surrounded by family and loved ones.

    A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday November 28, 2023 at Trinity Episcopal Church on Highway 33 in Chocowinity, NC and will be officiated by Stephen Batten. A burial service will follow in Trinity Cemetery on Hwy 33 in Chocowinity, NC. Pallbearers will include Cameron Sparrow, Ryan Walston, Lenny Chavez, Daniel Scott, Maegan Muse, and Sammy Deans.

    Mary Jo was born in Beaufort County to the late Mitchell E. Dixon and the late Josephine Jones Dixon. She was a 1962 graduate of Chocowinity High School where she was a member of the Cheerleading Squad and she also served as Chief Cheerleader. She was on the Homecoming Court where she was crowned Queen her junior year and she was also Queen of the Halloween Dance that year. She was Editor of the Tri-Hi-Y her Senior year and she was also voted Best All Around her Senior Year. Mary Jo worked in many different fields in her lifetime, including tobacco, working for WITN, Kenansville Elementary School, Belvoir Schools, The Department of Social Services Beaufort County, and with Paul Funeral Home & Crematory. She was a member of the South East Shag Club. She also enjoyed shopping, dancing, live music, fishing, going to the beach, and spending time with her family, especially the children. In addition to the Shag Club, she was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity where she served on the Vestry, the Women's Auxiliary, the Altar Guild, Choir, and she also served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. The best way to describe Mary Jo is she just loved life with a full heart.

    Survivors include her sister, Linda Lewis of Chocowinity, NC, her niece Michelle Lewis Brown of Washington, NC, her nephew, Daniel Lee Lewis and his wife Tracy of New Bern. She is also survived by her grand nieces Rhesa Jo Sparrow Walston, Taylor Lewis Scott, and Tori Lewis Chavez, Maegan Muse, and Melana Griffee. She is also survived by her grand nephews Cameron David Sparrow, and Ashton Muse. She's also survived by the following great grand nieces, Breelyn Josephine Walston, Helen Elisabeth Walston, Evangeline Gray Sparrow, Oaklynn Alice Scott, and soon to be born Sylvia Claire Chavez.

    She is preceded in death by her first husband Russell Guthrie Jr. and her second husband, Marvin Latham Jr.

    The family would like to extend a special thanks to her Aides who stood by her and did so much to make Mary Jo's last months so much better.

    Visitation will be held November 27th from 7pm -9pm at Paul Funeral Home. Family also welcomes guests to pay their condolences at any time prior to the Funeral and immediately following the Funeral at the home of Mary Jo Latham at 112 Dogwood Drive, Washington, NC.
