    William Burrell Crompton, Jr. Lt. Col. US Army Retired, age 84, a resident of River Road, Washington, NC, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Ridgewood Manner Nursing Home. A graveside celebration of his life with military honors will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, NC officiated by Dr. Jimmy Moore. A reception for family and friends will be Sunday, May 26, 2013 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Hillside Funeral Service, 4500 Hwy. 264 E., Washington, NC and then proceed to the cemetery in procession.

    Lt. Col. Crompton was born in New Castle, DE on December 23, 1928 son of the late William Burrell Crompton, Sr. and Kathryn Roberts Crompton. He was married to Betty P. Crompton on November 1, 1952 who survives. Lt. Col. Crompton joined the Army at age 17 and served his country for 28 years. He graduated from Chaminade University in Honolulu, HI and earlier attended the University of Delaware. He was a member of PKA Fraternity.

    Lt. Col. Crompton was a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a member of the Counterintelligence Corps. During the Vietnam War he served as an adviser to the Vietnamese and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Among his various tours was time spent in the 11th and 82nd Airborne Divisions, Headquarters 18th Airborne corps and he served as a Special Forces Officer with Special Action Force Asia.

    Upon his retirement from the Army he was employed as a finance officer at Tideland Mental Health Center from 1978 until 1991. He served on the board of Brown Library and was also a member of the Washington Yacht and Country Club where he enjoyed sailing and golf. He was a trumpet player and loved playing "big band" music with various groups in the area and he especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family and beloved grandchildren.

    In addition to his wife he is survived by his sons, William Burrell Crompton, III and wife Diana of Annapolis, MD; Timothy Lee Crompton and wife Pat of Washington and Richard Edward Crompton and wife Daisy of San Diego, CA and his grandchildren, Sarah Crompton Hayes and husband Matt; William Burrell Crompton, IV; Ashley Burton Crompton; Timothy Lee Crompton, Jr.; Christian Banks Crompton and Kyle Ikaika Crompton.

    The family suggests memorials be made to Friends of The Library, c/o Brown Library, 122 Van Norden St., Washington, NC 27889.
