Alton Earl Congleton | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Mr. Alton Earl Congleton, age 86, a resident of Chocowinity, NC died Wednesday January 10, 2024, at East Carolina Health Beaufort Hospital.

    The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday January 17, 2024, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington. Following the visitation, a chapel service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home and will be officiated by Pastor Jerry Smith. A burial will follow at Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great grandsons: Trey Spain, A. J. Congleton, Josh Congleton, D. J. Cale, Dwayne Asby, and Chanen Spain.

    Mr. Congleton was born in Beaufort County on October 8, 1937, son of the late James Marshall Congleton and the late Lela Bell Pinkham Congleton. He was a 1956 graduate of Bath High School. He married Janie Mae Martin Congleton who survives. He retired as the Paint Room supervisor at Singer Furniture Company after thirty-three years of service. He was very athletic in his younger years, playing basketball for Bath High School and softball for Singer Furniture. He was in the Army Reserves for six years, ready to serve his country. He enjoyed golf and fishing, but his true passion was serving the Lord which led him to become a Pentecostal Holiness Minister. He ministered to the residents at River Trace Nursing Center, formally known as Britthaven, churches and anyone who wanted to talk and hear about the Lord. He was a member of Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Holiness and attended Gordon Swamp Church.

    Survivors include his wife Janie of the home; his children: Lela Carol Congleton Spain of Washington, Alton Wayne Congleton of Washington, Teresa Congleton Barrow of Pinetown, Carolyn Evans and her husband Jeff of Williamston, and Ray Hann and his wife Michelle of Washington; a brother: Herbert Congleton and his wife Delaine of Chocowinity; twelve grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and a great great grandchild.

    Mr. Congleton was preceded in death, along with his parents by two wives; Frances H. Congleton and Anna Jo Congleton; two brothers: James Marshall Congleton, Jr. and Paul E. Congleton; four sisters: Edna Mae Congleton Woolard, Eula Gray Congleton, Ella Ruth Congleton, and Hilda Hardison; and a grandchild: Ryan Thaddeus Cale.

    Flowers are welcome and appreciated and the family kindly asks that any memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2418 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 2306, Raleigh, NC 27607.
