Of puppies and politicians - the anatomy of a political smear | Eastern North Carolina Now

Distortions, half truths, and outright lies appear too often in politics and thus give politics a bad name.  A recent attack piece postcard against a respected eastern NC conservative that wrongly portrayed him a mean to dogs and puppies is a prime example.  First, it is important to learn what really happened, then how it was distorted, and finally by whom and why it was done.

The attack post card was entitled "Michael Speciale. Unfit to Lead" and purported to show his attitude toward dogs based on a "puppy mill bill" before the legislature.  The bill was a pet project of Governor McCrory's wife and rushed to the floor before its wording could be written as well as it should have been.  That was particularly true of the weak and poorly worded definitions in the bill.  Solid definitions in a bill are critically important because if they are too ambiguous, courts will often strike down the law as "void for vagueness".

Representative Mike Speciale (R-Craven) pushed to strengthen the bill by sharpening the definitions so it would pass muster in the courts.  Since the bill was directed at bad actors running puppy mills, Speciale gave examples on the House floor he thought such bad actors might take using weak definitions of the bill.  If one read his entire comments in context that would be clear, but that is not how it is presented.

Unfortunately, hard left WRAL saw an opportunity to attack a conservative legislator and first took the comments out of context right after they happened. Now the liberal Republican establishment in Raleigh is trying to use the same smear against the genuine conservative in our state senate race to try to get their guy the nomination instead.

The nasty postcard was mailed by a political committee associated with liberal Republican Senate boss Phil Berger, who has repeatedly pushed liberal Democrat Governor Roy Cooper's key liberal agenda items through the legislature. The Berger-associated committee is called "Restore NC, Inc" and is based in Raleigh.  It is run by Berger's political operative Roger Knight, who was formerly a political operative for Mitch McConnell.  To give the false appearance of being a more local group, they rented a box at a private mail box office in Morehead City for their return address on this and other postcards backing Bob Brinson, Speciale's opponent.

Berger and his allies have been twisting arms of state senators and special interests for money to back Brinson.  They know Speciale has a record as a effective conservative who has been successful in pushing back against the smoke filled room Raleigh establishment and not letting them get their way.  That want Brinson going to Raleigh and in their debt instead.  This smear shows they will sink to whatever depth they think they have to in orider to accomplish that goal.

Brinson, at a political meeting was confronted with the smear postcard and asked to repudiate it.  He refused to do so.  He is thus right down there in the gutter with his backers Berger and Knight.

Brinson refusing to repudiate the smear that all people with political knowledge know to be a smear says a lot. So much for his claim of transparency. That's just words. So much for his claim of not being owned. He clearly is. Political ambition can make people do very disappointing things.
Speciale has a record. A very good record. It would be foolish to make a very suspect gamble on something else.

While he may not be you, he is way too much LIKE you, Little Bobbie. And your idea of "truth" is whether comething aligns with the far left narrative or not.

Just got another of "Big Bob" Brinson's blizzard of mailers, this one from another Phil Berger front group, called "Neighbors Helping North Carolina". This one had the gall to call Brinson "Honest, Transparent, Veteran". Like Restore NC, Inc., this is a dark money group that you cannot find listed at the NC Board of Elections or Open Secrets.

I will grant that Brinson, like Speciale, is a veteran. But "honest" when he backs groups telling outright lies about his opponent? I don't think so! Even worse is having a shady dark money group trying to push him as "transparent". That really takes the cake. There is nothing about a dark money group or the candidates who accept their support that is "transparent".

A comparision of how two eastern senators were treated by Berger on being forced to vote Berger's way on legislation or not shows how much Berger considers he owns those senators who rely on his campaign money to get elected. The first senator, whose name I will not call, is a staunch conservative who was a leader in the House Freedom Caucus before running for the senate and taking major support from Berger in his general election race in a marginal district. The second is Norm Sanderson, a staunch conservtive former House member who beat back a well financed challenge from a Berger henchman in his first primary. The Berger machine recruited wealthy businessman Randy Ramsey, a lifelong registered Republican who had nonetheless been a major Democrat political contributor to run against Sanderson in the primary. Ramsay outspent Sanderson by a lot, mailing a blizzard of postcards, but Sanderson won the primary by a wide margin.

When Berger started pushing the Obamacare Medicaid expansion, which was then the top objective of liberal Governor Roy Cooper's agenda, Berger's operatives pressured the first senator to vote for it, while they left Sanderson alone and he voted against it without any attempt by Berger to force him to go Berger's way. Berger clearly considered that due to the political support he gave the first senator, he owned him, but Berger clearly knew he did not own Sanderson.

Berger's operatives approached the first senator and told him Berger expected him to vote for the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. The senator told them that he had made opposition to that expansion a major issue in his campaign and had promised voters in his district he would oppose it. Further, he was receiving a lot of comments from voters in his district opposing it. Berger's operatives told the senator that none of that mattered, and the only thing that did matter was that Berger insisted he vote for it. The senator pointed out that Berger already had enough votes to pass it without his vote, and was again told that did not matter and Berger insisted he vote for it, too. The senator then suggested that at least he could maybe take a walk during the vote and not vote at all. Berger's operatives told him that was not sufficient and he had to affirmatively vote for it. Further they told the senator that if he did not, then none of his bills would get out of committee and no money would be going from the budget to his district. The sanator finally decided in good conscience, the most he could do was take a walk, so that is what he did. While he did get some retaliation from Berger for that, it was not as total as threatened.

There is only one candidate for State Senate in the Third District who would not owe his political soul to Phil Berger in the senate and that is Mike Speciale. He is the Norm Sanderson of this race. If citizens want to have a voice in Raleigh representing us, instead of beholden to the backroom Raleigh establishment bullyboys, Speciale is the only one we should consider voting for.

It tells the tale if you look at support among GOP elected officials. Amazingly both Kidwell and Richardson are on the same side on this one, for Speciale. They are both conservatives but often with a different take on things. Kidwell is doing radio ads for Speciale. Former Senator Bill Cook just did a fundraiser for Speciale.

Only "trans-partisan" county commissioner Frankie Waters, who contributed to a Democrat legislator while on the ballot as a "Republican" and who caucuses with both of the Democrats on the county commission is backing Brinson. Waters was also the commissioner who bragged in the last election about raising taxes three of the eight years he had been a commissioner. That fits well with Brison tax increase record in New Bern.

Brinson also has the support of two Lenoir County legislators, liberal Senator Jim Perry. Brinson keeps telling us he is so much more conservative than Perry, but then why is Perry such a major supporter of Brinson? That just doesn't smell right. The other big Brinson supporter in Lenoir County is a former State Representative who was a big liberal in Raleigh and then spent prison time for corruption.

When Brinson fails to repudiate this dishonest smear campaign, the slime covers him, too, and reflects on his lack of integrity. But I guess he is just afraid to cross Boss Berger. That is not what we need in Raleigh.

Lord Acton writes to Bishop Creighton that the same moral standards should be applied to all men, political and religious leaders included, especially since “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (1887)

In “Animal Farm” we find that some pigs are more equal than others.

It seems that Power makes men blind to morality more than money. Many seem to start out with the right attitude in Raleigh and then quickly get inoculated with this blind push for power. This seems to be the case with Burger and Moore.

We know what we are getting with Speciale. He proved his position and staying power with 4 terms in the House. On leaving he was called, “The conscience of the House”. Hardly something we could tag Tim Moore, Phil Burger, or Bob Brinson with.

The worst part of this smear is that Berger knew it was a lie when he put it out. I remember talking to another legislator right after WRAL's hit piece. This was widely discussed in the legislature at the time about how this was being distorted by a very biased media outlet and turned on its head. Speciale's attempt to improve the bill by making it more enforcible was presented as being opposed to the bill and hating dogs. It was a red flag to legislators to be careful that they avoid saying things in a way that could be taken out of context by a hostile media. This was so widely discussed, that Berger certainly knew the truth but chose to lie instead because it suits his political purpose.

It is also interesting that Steinburg coorperated with the hit on Speciale, but one has to consider the context there. Steinberg was a huge supporter of wind and solar energy and the Greta Thunberg agenda generally, and is now even a paid lobbyist for wind and solar. Speciale was a staunch opponent of subsidies and mandates for wind and solar, and one of his successes for conservatives was forcing the removal of all state tax subsidies to wind and solar from the budget. Steinberg and Speciale were at loggerheads on an issue that was important to Steinburg and he used the opportunity to take a cheap shot.

One of the huge differences between Speciale and Brinson is that while Speciale voted repeatedly to reduce taxes in the legislature and never to increase them, Brinson in his partial term on the New Bern city council has already voted to RAISE taxes.

Stan, There may not be a party far enough to the left for Little Bobbie currently on the ballot in NC, so he may be unaffiliated. That would allow him to take a GOP ballot. That is a good argument for closing the GOP primary to real only registered Republicans. Why should Republican haters be allowed to vote in Republican primaries?

This is a totally sleazy way to run a campaign with such smears. Brinson is as dirty as Berger when he goes along with it. We do not need dishonorable people like that representing us.

Big Bob: You can't vote for him. Remember, you are a proud Leftist.

This is a Republican primary.
