poll: young voters in US turning right, following youth vote in Europe turning right | Eastern NC Now

Sir Winston Churchill once remarked that "if you are not a socialist at 20, you have no heart; if you are not a conservative at 40, you have no brain."  Traditionally, young voters have been  on the left side of the spectrum, but that is changing.  It first became evident in Europe.  In regular yearly polling in Germany, the pupulist right Alternativ fur Deutschland is polling as the most popular party among young voters, with the traditional conservative CDU second.  Similarly, in France, it was young voters who powered the huge increase in vote share of the populist right National Rally.  That pattern has beenn fairly consistent around Europe.

Polls have started showing the same trend in the United States with young voters moving right.  Now a regular yearly poll of young voters shows that support for Republicans now tops that for Democrats among this age group.  The annual National Public Opinion Reference Survey by the liberal Pew Research Center shows that  47% of voters between 18 and 29 were Republican or leaned Republican while 46% were Democrat or leaned Democrat.  This is a demographic that supported Biden by 20 points in 2020.
