Mrs. Vermell Swanner Jones, 98, a resident of River Trace Nursing Home and previously her home of 107 Paul Street, Washington, NC, passed away on November 6, 2024.

    Mrs. Vermell Swanner Jones, 98, a resident of River Trace Nursing Home and previously her home of 107 Paul Street, Washington, NC, passed away on November 6, 2024.

    A graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery with Ray West officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery, and other times at the home of Melinda Switzer, 108 Sandpiper Bay, Washington, NC.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to, Roanoke Christian Service Camp, 389 Christian Service Camp Rd, Washington, NC 27889.

    Mrs. Jones was born in Beaufort County on September 14, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Guy and Mary Jones Swanner. While growing up, she lived in the Old Ford Community and later at Blounts Creek. She attended school at Old Ford and graduated from Aurora High School.

    She worked at Samson Shirt Factory and retired in 1991. She was a member of the First Church of Christ and attended while her health allowed her to.

    She married Lynwood P. Harris of Swan Quarter in 1947, who was the father of her children. She is survived by her children; Gaye Paul of Washington, NC, Melinda Switzer (Ricky) of Washington, NC, Lynwood "Pete" Harris (Angie) of Rocky Mount, NC and Wayne Harris (Wendy) of Farmville, NC.

    She is also survived by her grandchildren; Patrick Paul (Elizabeth), Courtney Herring (Travis), Frederick Switzer (Cristen), Krystle Ange (Tawney), Justin Hall (Greg), Josh Harris (Haley), and Dylan Harris.

    She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Lindsey, Cierra, Madison, Paxton, Stella, Charlie, Callie, Tucker, Jonas, Simon, Eva, Rose, Paige, Bear, Joy, and Silas.

    In July of 1973, she married Cleveland O. Jones, who preceded her in death in January of 1991.

    She is survived by her sister, Geraldine Smith and brother, Guy Swanner. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her sisters, Kay Francis Swanner, Christine Allen, Delphine Wood, and her brother Clyle Swanner.

    She was loved by many and will be missed by many and always told her children to not worry about her, to go have fun while they could.

    Her family would like to say thank you to all the employees at River Trace Nursing Home for taking good care of her for the last few years.
