Wall Street Journal - School Choice wins big in Texas | Eastern North Carolina Now

finally passes its major hurdle in Texas House

ENCNow

School choice has won big in Texas, finally passing its biggest hurdle, the Texas House, where it prevailed with ten votes to spare.  The plan will appropriate a billion dollars to provide school choice for Texas children, with a $10,000 per student scholarship to private or religious schools and $2,000 for homeschoolers.

School choice has always had strong support from the governor and the state senate, but in the last session it was blocked in the House by a liberal Republican speaker who held his position in a coalition with liberal Democrats.  Governor Abbott then got heavily involved in the 2024 Republican legislative primaries, recruiting conservative challengers to the Speaker and his allies, raising money for and endorsing the challengers, and beating most of the Speaker's allies in the primary.  That has greased the skids to pass school choice this session.

Here is North Carolina, we had the school system in Davidson County, not normally a very "woke" place, suspend a student for asking a teacher who asked them to use the word "alien" whether it should be in reference to a space alien or an illegal alien. The term "illegal alien" is a correct and proper legal term used and defined in the United State Code (federal law), but these school system idiots got in a tizzy and expelled him for using a correct and proper legal term to ask a legitimate question. When public shcools go this far off the deep end, parents desperately need alternatives.
