Conservatism in the modern era
What does it mean to be a conservative?
The answer is straightforward enough. Conservatives advocate free-market capitalism, limited government taxation and regulation, protection of persons and property from violence and fraud.
From this simple starting point, things get fuzzier. Do we advocate free-market capitalism when it comes to drugs or an abrogated system? Who decides which drugs are legal and illegal and what the penalties are for these things? In our modern system, a giant bureaucracy, run by generations of unelected officials, make these decisions for us. Tylenol can be made in a highly regulated factory and sold over-the-counter, but Vicodin can only be sold by a licensed drug-dealer, a certified pharmacist, and then only with a certified doctor’s permission slip. Each certification is highly regulated by the State.
Do we advocate free-market capitalism when it comes to inventions or do we advocate a system of patents and copyrights? Thomas Jefferson was opposed to patents and viewed them as a limitation of personal liberty. The big-government boys liked patents because they were government-granted monopolies. Are you in favor of the government granted monopolies or in favor of the Thomas Jefferson position of a patent-free society?
When it comes to protecting people and property, the conservative position relies heavily on self-reliance. That’s why we tend to advocate in favor of gun ownership and are opposed to heavy gun regulation. The liberal position is to limit gun ownership with the belief that guns are made for the express purpose of harming others. What better way to protect individuals from harm than to limit the ways that the citizens have to harm one another, they ask?
In terms of protecting property from fraud, do we make the court system the protector of the credulous or do we advocate a buyer-beware system?
This all leads to the most difficult aspect of conservatism. The philosophy of conservatism is straightforward enough, as stated above. But we are not starting with a brand new society. We are born into a world that has been bureaucratized for hundreds of years. Conservatism is always on the defensive against the liberals in its own time, but it is also starting from behind the curve. There is nothing conservative about income taxes or the monstrous bureaucracies that exist to regulate, restrict, and hinder all aspects of citizen’s lives.
Conservative values must guide conservative actions. Conservatism cannot mean the conservation of the status quo. It cannot mean actively fighting the current push towards liberalism. It is not enough to oppose a further slide into socialism, liberalism, and leftism. A conservative must become an active dismantler of the machinery of socialist government. A conservative must not only reduce taxation, but reduce bureaucracy, regulation, and the welfare state.

Washingtonian: Regarding the City of Washington government - So slow, too slow; poor management interminably; informing the public through all available media, so the people might be aware of all that is afoot, might be a good start to accelerate from the certain status of their state of the pathetic; a terrible condition of any government.

Stan in your June 22 comment on a Drone project at our airport, I found this at the City Council April 14,2025 minutes:
The City has received notification of an award for $13.5M in TRDF grants for multiple projects at Washington Warren Airport. The "North General Aviation (GA) Taxilanes, Hangars, & Drone Pad" is 1 of 9 projects identified to be funded w these funds. Bids were initially received in Jan 2025; however, only 1 bid was received. Per th City Purchasing Policy, th bid was not opened, & th project was rebid. Bids were then opened & received in Feb 2025. 2 bids were received w A.R. Chesson Construction Co Inc., submitting th lowest responsible bid of $4,515,779.35. There is no local match required for this project. cms8.revize.com |
Washingtonian: You are right; it ain't fair. Public education, more and more, is becoming a smooth hustle for the Left, and the public owning these schools rather than tearing them down, or allowing them to fall into complete disrepair is what I believe to be the best option to aid in turning the public's education around, and do it NOW.
Of course, we will probably need one more smart commissioner first. |
Stan, Regarding buying back the closed schools.
I understand that there is a govt system of rules regarding ownership of real estate such as the schools. Its just that it suddenly dawned on me that it all seemed rather rigged against the taxpayers. We taxpayers of Beaufort County, give the money to the school system to build and then own that school property. Then, if they close the school down, the school system doesnt just give it back to the taxpayers of Beaufort County who funded the whole thing in the first place, instead we taxpayers have to buy back... the school we paid for in the first place. (If the Commissioners choose to make that decision.) Yes I know the taxpayers dont own it, but we are always Paying for it. Both coming and going. What a world! P.S. Mama's dont let your babies grow-up and buy homes inside any city. |
On the City Government, I know first hand of terrible management and corruption for decades, but now, I hearing such stories from many of my constituents that beckons many memories of bad governing: One instance of discussion appears to be, after all the fanfare about this drone opportunity at the airport: What is happening now? What did occur to explain why so little has happened in that regard of NOW?
Explanations are warranted. |
Washingtonian: On Snowden, it is a general statute situation that the county commissioners have to buy and pay market value, which would not be very much considering what schools sell for historically, especially in Aurora.
I am strongly in favor of buying all school buildings back in Beaufort County, as the local school board is now so intent on consolidating so as to keep children in buses for large blocks of time in their young active parts of their lives, and also to evidently to reduce parental involvement. My strong feeling is that now, with School Choice evolving in North Carolina, inexpensive school buildings could be a probable incubator for better managed charter schools and private schools, or ... if the Beaufort County School Board learns how to assert itself into a management position, then they could take the building back from the commissioners, and finally ... Do what it is prudent and right! |
City government is a two man show. The current city council is a toothless joke because a majority is in the mayor's hip pocket. If he says jump, they ask "how high?". Between the major and the manager, I suspect that if the item in on the mayor's personal agenda, he calls the shots, and if not, it is the manager. Of course, Sadler's wife is the power behind his throne, and in many ways, she may be the one calling the shots. At city council meetings, one can witness her furiously texting the mayor up at the front telling him what to do, and him looking down at his phone reading her text instructions. And she holds no elected office. What a sad state our city government is in. Our school board and county are not any better.

Hello John, Thanks 4 th thoughts.
Do u hav a memory of th last time we had ppl on "governing boards who will assert th powers those boards possess to keep th bureaucracy in line." I recall (approximately) a few decades back when we elected a man professing to be a Republican to the County Commissioners. Turned out he wasnt! The joke became "Dont be a Mickey." Its not easy being conservative. Human nature is to want to Help the needy. The trick is to be strict about using the Govt's money to be overly helpful. What I've noticed is that the Democrats are generous with OTHER People's Money. They dont donate their own money to causes, and charities. What kinds of things are just cause to be fired? Have we seen the contract that the city signed with its manager? On buying th Snowden school... Didnt we taxpayers already buy it th 1st time? Why should we hav to buy it again? On th TitleSearch: We Washington citizens are ALSO BeaufortCo Citizens so shouldnt th City show us cits th T.S.? |
