    Marion Carroll Griffin, 76, died on October 5, 2013 after a brief illness.

    He was born in Martin County on December 25, 1936 to the late James Marion and Arwilda Maude Leggett Griffin.

    He attended Martin County schools, graduating from Robersonville High School in 1955. On August 9, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart Sonja Harriet Taylor of Robersonville. He then joined the US Army serving our country in Korea. Upon his return, he graduated from NC State with a bachelor's degree and later earned his Master's Degree in Education. He started his career as an Agricultural Extension agent in Duplin County, living in Kenansville, NC for 14 years. He was very involved in the 4-H program there for many years. In 1975 he became the Agricultural Extension Chairman in Beaufort County, moving with his family to Washington, NC. He retired in 1990 after 30 years of service. He was actively involved with the Beaufort County Fair for many years coordinating the exhibits. He was also a member of the Bunyan Ruritan Club and enjoyed their monthly meals and meetings as well as their annual fundraisers. He was an avid Wolfpack fan his entire life and was a season ticket holder for football and basketball games. His love was Wolfpack basketball, despite the team's ups and downs, and enjoyed attending games with his family in Reynolds Coliseum and the PNC Arena.

    Survivors in addition to his wife are his daughters Harriet Carol Griffin and friend Sherry Salyer and Laura Griffin Hicks and son-in-law Allen Hicks; grandchildren Carter Allen Hicks and Emily Elizabeth Hicks, all of Apex; sister Janie Peel and husband Paul of Rocky Mount; Johnnie Griffin and wife Jenny of Robersonville and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends were an important part of his life. His grandchildren were the love of his life and he enjoyed spending time with them more than anything.

    Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 8 at 2 pm at the First Christian Church of Washington. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends on Monday, October 7 from 6:30-8:30pm at Paul Funeral Home in Washington, NC and other times at the residence.

    Memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church, 401 E. 2nd Street, Washington, NC 27889.
