The Virginia GOP losses this election have been attributed to the party leadership trying to select candidates from on high and to clear primaries for their chosen candidates. This not only resulted in some weak candidates, but also a lower than expected turnout of GOP voters and conservative independents.

Unfortunately, we are seeing the same high handed maneuvers here in North Carolina, with the party establishment trying to dictate who our nominees will be instead of leaving it to GOP primary voters to make the selections. The party establishment has set up behind Michael Whatley, a longtime DC operative and partner in a DC lobbying and public relations firm who has little appeal to the average voter, as our US Senate nominee and head of the ticket. The state party, national party, and Senate leadership are all sending signals that Whatley should be the nominee and the primary should be cleared for him. Some of their brazen moves on a joint fundraising committee come across clearly as an endorsement of Whatley even as some on the state level try to claim that it is not.
A secretive cabal has already made the determination as to who our statewide judicial nominees will be, including the nominee for the second most important race on the ballot, the state supreme court seat now held by radical leftwing Soros Justice Anita "ANTIFA" Earls. Again, we have potential candidates who would be much stronger at the ballot box than the one who this group selected, but it does not look like any of those other potential candidates will take on the backroom boys.
This backroom manipulation hurt the Virginia GOP up and down the ballot and has the potential to do the same in North Carolina.

Michael Whatley has the personal appeal of a mashed potato sandwich, and the Supreme Court candidate chosen by this bunch has even less appeal. The NCGOP needs to do better if it wants to win, and I have a novel idea, Why not leave the selection to an open primary of GOP voters instead of trying to handpick favorites?

This seems to be the trend. We see it around the country. It's certainly happening in the North Carolina GOP. Same thing in local GOP.

John Steed,
It is easy to see how the GOP elites sway the machinations of the GOP. They rig the state party conventions in many ways to prevent the grassroot republicans from having any influence over the outcomes. The Plan of Organization is ignored or overridden by parliamentary procedures; attendees are shutdown from speaking by ruling comments or motions from the floor ruled out of order, and counting votes for chairman and other officers from members not in attendance. Participates are discouraged from attending by charging exorbitant fees to attend the many functions they have during the three days. When you add the three nights hotel expenses and travel, it can easily cost $800 to attend and participate in all the functions. Why attend if your vote is going to count even though you are not in attendance? |

The insiders are indeed trying to rig the game on our nominees. The best way to spell loser is W-H-A-T-L-E-Y. We need to keep this seat and to do it we need a nominee that is something other than a warmed over Tillis. At least we have someone else to vote for in that one. It does not look like we will on the Supreme Court seat, and we desperately need a nominee who is stronger than the one the insiders want to foist upon us.
