Jonathan Turley: Europe declares war on free speech in America by Americans | Eastern NC Now

EU authoritarianism is a threat to Americans

ENCNow

Suppression of free speech is rampant in the European Union and at the national level as well in many European countries.  The EU's Digital Services Act asserts powers to suppress online free speech even outside Europe, by fining American digital companies that do not knuckle under to EU censorship policies.  They are already moving on that front, and this could even impact individual American citizens with fines or even criminal charges.

The Trump administration has counterattacked with both Vice President Vance and President Trump denouncing the EU's attempts to criminalize and suppress free speech.  Recently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio went a step further and issued travel sanctions, barring five top European advocates of censorship from travelling to the US, one of them the former EU Commissioner who was responsible for the Digital Services Act.

Now the EU hierarchy is pitching a tantrum over Rubio's highly justified actions.

One of America's most renowned defenders of Freedom of Speech, George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley has written an excellent article on the EU's war on America's Free Speech:

Turley and retired Harvard University Law School Constitutional Law Professor Alan Dershowitz have both written extensively on freedom of speech.  There are two sets of buzz words associated with censorship.  The first set is "misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation".  The second set is "hate speech" and "hate symbol".  The advocates of censorship prefer not to give any of these terms specific definitions allowing them to apply them in whatever political way they choose.
