Will Paris elect an anti-Mandani as its next mayor? Anti-immigration candidate doing well | Eastern NC Now

31 year old Sarah Knafo is tied for second in race that will go to runoff

ENCNow

Paris may see the election of a mayor with just as unconventional background as New York's Mandani, but completely on the other side of the political spectrum.  31-year old Sarah Knafo is a young Jewish woman whose family fled Morocco during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and moved to Paris' scruffy Seine-Saint Denis neighborhood where Sarah grew up.  Now she is the only Member of the European Parliament for  France's most hardline anti-immigration party, Reconquest, and their candidate for mayor of Paris.

With the soft left coalition around the Socialist Party of the outgoing mayor holding a slight lead in early polls, Knafo has started out tied for second place with the Macron candidate and the candidate of the hard left.  She is leading the candidates of the dominant anti-immigration party, the National Rally, which leads in national polls for the presidential race and also the candidate of the traditional conservative Les Republicains.

Knafo's youth and dynamic new ideas like submitting more issues for referenda of the citizens, much like Switzerland, and, reducing the onerous property taxes by big cuts in city staff, and eliminating all funding for NGOs, are gaining her lots of favorable attention. She will first have to make the runoff in the first round in March.  Which other candidate is in the runoff will slos be crucial.
