referendum in October - will it become US 51st state?

ENCNow

The campaign for the independence of Canada's oil rich province of Alberta has officially submitted its petition for a referendum on independence.  Some think this could ultimately result in Alberta becoming the 51st state in our own country.

Organizers of the independence campaign submitted 301,620 signatures to Elections Alberta.  To call a referendum by petition requires 178,000 signatures.  The committee obtained the signatures of 18% of those who voted in the last provincial election.  It is expected that the referendum will be held in October, with the date of October 17 likely.  Alberta's Conservative Premier, Danelle Smith has confirmed she will not put any roadblocks in the way of the independence drive.
