Anti-immigration One Nation Party wins upset special election for Australian parliament | Eastern NC Now

takes seat of former leader of Liberal Party in landslide

ENCNow

In a huge upset, a candidate of anti-immigration populist / nationalist One Nation Party has won a special election (or by-election as they are called in the British system) for a seat in the Australian federal parliament from New South Wales.  The seat, Farrer, had been vacated by the former Parliamentary leader of the Liberal Party,  Sussan Ley, whose party had held the seat for 70 years.

What was also significant was the margin of victory for the Farrer seat, with new One Nation MP David Farley winning 38.8% of the vote to 27.9% for an Independent, 12.1% for the Liberal candidate and 9.5% for the National Party candidate.  The Liberal Party and the National Party are part of what is called the "Coalition", both of the center-right, although the National Party is a little farther right.  A total of ten parties and two independents contested the seat.

In the 2025 national parliamentary election for Farrer, One Nation's candidate came in fourth 6.6% of the vote, so this is a massive increase.  On the other hand, the Liberal candidate in the last election won with 43.4%.

One Nation got its start as an anti-immigration party and continues that message strongly, but it has now started hitting a variety of other issues.  Last year, it became the first party to call for an end to the wind and solar energy transition.

Last month, One Nation came in second to the ruling Labor Party in the state election in South Australia.  In the previous election there, they had only received two percent of the vote.  A recent national poll by YouGov showed One Nation tied with Labor for first place if a national election were held today.

Meanwhile, in Germany, populist / nationalist anti-immigration Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD} soared to 41% as its lead widened in the latest poll for the upcoming Saxony-Anhalt state election to be held in September.  In the multi-party system, that puts them on the knife edge of winning an absolute majority in the state parliament.
