Iceland voters choose sovereignty in national referendum, reject bid to join European Union | Eastern NC Now

vote to reject even negotiation on matter

ENCNow

Iceland's voters have chosen sovereignty and independence in a national referendum over joining the European Union.   In spite of the prime minister and her center-left government's strong support for negotiating to join the EU, voters rejected even authorizing her to talk to the EU about it.  Polls showed that voters were concerned about keeping control over their own laws, fishing rights, and keeping their own national currency, the krone, instead of the euro.  Supporters of joining the EU tried to make an issue of President Trump desire to control nearby Greenland, but voters were not buying that argument.
