Christian!!! Do You Really Understand What's at Stake This Tuesday?

The battle for control of the North Carolina House of Representatives is drawing considerable attention, and the stakes are significant.

Republicans have controlled the General Assembly since 2011. Today, they hold 71 seats in the 120-member House, just one short of a veto-proof supermajority. Meanwhile, Democrats are seeking to gain enough seats to take control of the chamber for the first time in 16 years.

What happens on Tuesday will help determine the direction of North Carolina government for the next two years.

At stake are major decisions involving private education, parental rights, religious liberty, abortion policy, LGBTQ, medicinal and recreational marijuana legalization, and the balance of power between the legislature and liberal Governor Josh Stein.

The outcome will affect which legislation advances, which proposals are stopped, and whether lawmakers can override a governor's veto.

Elections have consequences, and so does staying home.

As Chris Cooper, professor of political science and public affairs at Western Carolina University, aptly put it, “The fight isn’t whether the Republicans can beat the Democrats; it’s whether the Republicans can beat the couch.”

Consider what’s at stake, and exercise your responsibility as a citizen.
