About
I am a native of eastern North Carolina. I was born in Kinston and raised in Greene County. I met my wife, Petra, while serving in the Air Force in Germany. I was a weatherman. We have one son, Joshua, who just graduated from Gardner-Webb University this year. So proud.
I returned home with my wife and an infant son to study at East Carolina University. I completed an undergraduate degree in Political Science with a focus on economics. Being a glutton for punishment, I went to graduate school and managed to complete a Master’s in International Studies with a concentration in Business.
I ran as a libertarian candidate for NC House District 9 in 1996, I lost. It was a spur of the moment decision for a 25 year old, but I learned a lot about how our political system works. I began working for different campaigns and somehow decided to become a democrat. I was elected chairman of the Pitt County Democratic Party in 2005 and served for four years. I met some wonderful people during that time and learned a great deal about party politics. In 2010, I decided to run for the most unwinnable seat in North Carolina. I ran against Walter Jones Jr. for Congress; I lost.
I wasn’t done yet. I ran for County Commissioner in 2014 in Pitt County. I did a little better, but I lost just the same. By this time, I realized just how out of step I was with the Democratic Party. This had always been the case, but I was able to massage my positions to fit in and even become a leader. It’s something most politician have to do, but it really bothered me. The democrats were moving further left, and I was moving to the right towards my libertarian roots. In 2016, I became an early Trump supporter and changed my voter registration to unaffiliated. So here I am, with a lot to say and no party to box me into a corner. I’ve finally won what’s most important, a voice of my own.
