Obituary: William David “Billy” Singleton | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Mr. William David “Billy” Singleton, 78, a resident of 1421 Slatestone Road, Washington, died Tuesday evening, April 26, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center.

    A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at Beaver Dam Church of Christ officiated by Tony Krantz. A private committal service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery.

    Mr. Singleton was born in Beaufort County on Sept. 8, 1932, son of the late Marvin Frank Singleton and Ruby Mae Alligood Singleton. He was a graduate of Washington High School. Mr. Singleton served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Later, he was employed by Washington City Schools, working first in the maintenance department and then as the carpentry teacher at Washington High School, where his students knew him as “Chief”. Upon his retirement in 1993, he worked for six years as a real estate agent.

    Mr. Singleton was a member of Beaver Dam Church of Christ where he served as an elder, a deacon, a Sunday School Teacher and the Youth Director. He was a member of Tau Tribe # 18, Improved Order of Redmen as well as the Beaufort County Grange.

    Mr. Singleton helped start Boy Scout Troop 37 at Beaver Dam and was active as an adult leader throughout the Troop’s existence. Local Eagle Scouts, including three nephews, will serve as Mr. Singleton’s pallbearers: Andrew J. Sutton, Joshua A. Maness, Nicholas A. Maness, Michael Bowen, John A. Johnston III, James C. Tetterton Jr., Carl W. Smith Jr., Gary D. Chrismon Jr.

    On Nov. 30, 1956, he married the former Zelma Elizabeth Woolard, who survives. In addition to his wife, Zelma, he is survived by his son, David F. Singleton and his wife, Polly of Washington; his grandchildren, Madison, William and Mary Helen Singleton; his brother, Marvin E. Singleton and his wife, Marie of Kinston; and his sister, Nancy S. Douglas and her husband, Aaron of Washington.

    The family will receive friends 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home.
