Weather Update for Today | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Good Morning:

    I want to alert everybody to a subtle, but noteworthy change to the weather forecast for this afternoon. The word is "Numerous" when referencing Scattered Thunderstorms with some becoming severe. The main concerns for these severe storms this afternoon are heavy rains, damaging winds and a slight chance of hail. Just a gentle reminder to keep our First Responders and fellow County Employees "Weather Aware" this afternoon. High winds equal: downed trees, downed power lines and roadway obstacles such as family trash cans or children's toys in the roadways.

    The storms last week demonstrated the public's willingness to drive over downed power lines. This poses a real possibility of serious injury or even death because electricity does not discriminate as to whom it will reach out and bite. First Responders please remember the public watches our actions and if we cross the downed power lines with our trucks they will follow suit in their personal vehicles. If power lines are laying across a home or vehicle the occupants should be instructed to remain calm and stay inside until First Responders can arrive on the scene to remove the electrical threat or affect a rescue action for them.

    Have a great day, but do stay aware of changing weather conditions. When approaching water across roadways do the smart thing: "Turn around, don't drown"!
