Tansey Topics: A Weekly Look At What's Happening At BCCC From President Barbara Tansey | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

Beaufort County Community College has received a $248,302 investment from the Duke Energy Foundation. The funds will be used to upgrade the equipment in the Welding Technology Program at Beaufort County Community College. With $127,347 from the award, BCCC will purchase new Lincoln Electric Vrtex virtual welders that will complement instruction in the program. With the virtual welders, students can practice their welding techniques "virtually" and receive instant feedback from their instructors without wasting expensive materials. The college will use $120,955 from the award to purchase robotic welding machines that students can use at their individual stations and for instructor training in the use of the machines. This equipment will supplement instruction the students receive in robotic welding technology. I thank the Duke Energy Foundation for this award and BCCC Grant Writer Sara Singleton for her work on the application that resulted in BCCC obtaining this grant. I also thank Lead Welding Instructor Ted Clayton, Business and Industry Services Dean Ben Morris and Board Chairman Russell Smith for their warm welcome of Duke Energy Regional Director Millie Chalk. She took time to tour of our Welding Technology Program and learn about the program's needs.

Here's a look at BCCC events happening on campus and in the community:

BCCC Board of Trustees

  • The Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees welcomed Jordan Pooser to its ranks this week when Jordan, newly-elected President of BCCC's Student Government Association, took the oath of office. Jordan, of Belhaven, joins the board as an ex officio member. He succeeds Jackson Lancaster who transferred to East Carolina University. Jordan earned an associate in arts degree from BCCC in May but returned to the college in the fall to complete additional studies before transferring to a four-year university.
  • Students in the Welding Technology Program presented the gift of a metal replica of a trawler used by fishermen in North Carolina's coastal waters to the BCCC Board of Trustees. The trawler, named Lil' Beaufort, will be on display in the newly-renovated lobby of Building 1. It was made by Ted and his students as an extra-curricular activity. The board and I thank Ted and our welding students very much for this beautiful gift.

BCCC Foundation

  • Don't forget the deadline to nominate students to represent Beaufort County Community College as Ambassadors for the 2015-2016 Academic Year. The deadline for Ambassador nominations is Friday, February 13, 2015. Nominees must have a 3.0 grade point average and must not have a felony conviction. For more information about the Ambassador Program or for a copy of the nomination form, contact Interim Foundation Specialist Marcia Norwood at 940-6218 or by email at marcia.norwood@beaufortccc.edu.
  • The campaign to raise money for our digital sign is once again under way under the leadership of Foundation Director Serena Sullivan. The campaign is about 79 percent of the way towards its fundraising goal. To date $63,298.32 in contributions and pledges have been received with about $16,776 remaining to be raised. I hope everyone will consider making a contribution of some amount to this worthy cause. Once the sign is up and running, it will be another example of "showing our pride" and will better serve the college and the community than the vinyl signs we are using!

Beaufort County Early College High School

  • Congratulations to the students, faculty and staff of the Beaufort County Early College High School. The school received an "A" grade in the 2013-1014 School Performance Grade, School Performance Score and Growth Status Report from the Department of Public Instruction this week. It also exceeded expected growth performance for its students. High school scores are based on standardized test results, graduation rates and the percentage of students who pass Math 111. The BCECHS was one of 132 schools statewide, or 5.4 percent of the state's 2,424 public schools receiving grades, to earn an "A" on the report. BCECHS seems to lead the pack every year in all performance standards! Thanks to Principal Emily Pake and all of those associated with the school who worked so hard for this achievement!
  • Three Beaufort County Early College High School students have been recognized for their writing efforts by the North Carolina Reading Association. Those cited are sophomores ToneAsia Roberson of Washington and Zach Sireci of Blounts Creek and junior Rebecca Williams of Washington. Each student had a poem chosen for publication by a committee of the organization. Each year, the North Carolina Reading Association encourages students from kindergarten through 12th grade to enter their Young Author's Writing Competition. Students from across the state submitted entries related to this year's theme, "Dare to Dream." The students will be recognized at a Young Authors' Celebration to be held in Raleigh on Saturday, March 14.
