Check your Southern Bias at the door and venture into the other side

I cannot say that I agree with the points made in this presentation but it is worth the consideration if for no other reason that it has some great pictures of the South.

I will first caution you that if you are a proud southerner you might have some trouble getting through this differing view. I neither endorse nor refute anything in the article. I just present it as an alternative view and analysis.

Here is a quote from: The Bitter Southerner

You see, the South is a curiosity to people who aren't from here. Always has been. Open up your copy of Faulkner's 1936 masterpiece, "Absalom, Absalom!" Find the spot where Quentin Compson's puzzled Canadian roommate at Harvard says to him, "Tell about the South. What it's like there. What do they do there. Why do they live there. Why do they live at all."

This is the story of the making of a documentary called "The Old South, The New South" by a southerner. Well at least he calls himself a southerner.

During an interview in New York with southern writer Kathryn Stockett who wrote the novel "The Help"which was later made into a movie he had the following exchange:

"You know, I'm from the South, too," I ventured.

"Oh really," she replied, her soft Mississippi accent seeping through. "Where are you from?"

    "I grew up in Dallas."

She gave me a sly, sweet smile and said, "Honey, that ain't the South."

One suggestion, this web site might be a bit slow as the images are enormous and take some time to load.

Gone with the Wind My Southern Education

The article is not about Gone with The Wind. Click on the link just above and it will take you to a site which challenges the roots of a Southern Education that the war was not about Slavery. It is a provocative argument that most Southerners will not agree with. I was not precise enough in the original post and should have explained. The gist of the Bitter Southerner is that GWTW never really existed as shown and is just another Southern Myth propagated by the losers of the war. I offer it as an alternative point of view that Us Rebels don't like to hear.
