Fox Hunting for Seniors | Eastern North Carolina Now

Rich young folks have horses and ride with the dogs during the day. Seasoned citizens without horses turn the dogs loose at night and sit around the camp fire drinking, telling tall tales and listening to their dog's unique mouth (bark). The lead dog gives owner bragging rights. The last dog is an embarrassment.

Gray foxes run in circles and red foxes take the dogs straight to the next county. Very seldom are any caught. After several hours the dogs are tired and the fox gone. It is time for the drunken owners to find the dogs by riding down dirt roads blowing truck horns or blowing cow horns .

A good time had by all.

I am not an expert but had Beagles for rabbit hunting and they were not pets. However Dad's bird dog was not a pack animal and was a pet and good hunter-- More of a one to one connection with the owner. The Walker fox hounds are very docile and do not get upset when a stranger walks into the pen.

Obviously all fox hunters do not drink. Some might enjoy freezing in the night air listening to friends tell stories.
