College Of The Albemarle And Emmerich Theatre Production Company To Present The Wizard Of Oz | Eastern North Carolina Now

The opening production of the College of The Albemarle Performing Arts Center 2015/16 season is the classic musical, The Wizard of Oz. The story that has captivated the imagination of children and adults alike for generations comes to life September 10 through 18 in Elizabeth City with a cast of 72. Dorothy, a Kansas farm girl, dreams of a place over the rainbow, "Where troubles melt like lemon drops." A tornado sweeps Dorothy and her house away to the magical land of Oz. Her house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East and kills her. When Dorothy comes out of her house she meets Glinda the Good Witch, and dozens of adorable Munchkins. Glinda points the way to the Emerald City where she hopes the Wizard of Oz can help Dorothy find her way home. As Dorothy travels along the yellow brick road she encounters the Wicked Witch of the West, flying monkeys, the Scarecrow, Tinman, Lion, and the wonderful citizens of Oz. In the end the fraudulent (though loveable and comical) Oz offers to take Dorothy back home himself. The journey through Oz leads Dorothy and her friends to find heart, courage, brains, and most importantly, home.

All the magical music from the movie version of The Wizard of Oz is included in this production. The costumes, sets, and nostalgic story promise to make this one of the most spectacular productions to date on the COA Performing Arts Center stage.

QUOTE from the director, Jeffrey Emmerich:

"I am thrilled to be directing this show here at COA. As a junior in high school I played the Scarecrow and The Wizard of Oz has always been a favorite. We have over 70 very talented COA staff, students, and community members in the cast. It's going to be stunning. The dancing, music, sets, and costumes are going to make this a show to remember!"
