800,000 small N.C. businesses generate nearly half of state's economic output

Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory celebrated the contributions of local small businesses by proclaiming Saturday, November 28, 2015, as Small Business Saturday in North Carolina.

"Nothing compares to North Carolina's small, independently owned businesses that create jobs, boost our economy and preserve neighborhoods," said Governor McCrory. "I encourage North Carolinians to buy local on Saturday and throughout the year to support small businesses that contribute so much to local communities across the state."

This year marks the sixth annual Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting local businesses and the communities they serve.

North Carolina is home to more than 800,000 small businesses that account for nearly half of our gross state product and about fifty percent of the private sector workforce.

To encourage small businesses to thrive in North Carolina, the One North Carolina Small Business Matching Funds Program has awarded 51 grants to small firms in the state, totaling nearly $2.5 million since 2014. Under the program, the State of North Carolina provides matching grants of up to $50,000 to North Carolina businesses that have received either federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant awards.
