Ann Latham was born on Aug. 15, 1931, on the Latham family farm east of Belhaven, N.C., the youngest of two brothers and a sister, Vann, Charles, and Jane. Ann loved living on the farm with her parents and grandparents. She started school in Belhaven and then went to Virginia Intermont College and St. Mary’s School.

She married Doane Rouse, who was a Highway Patrolman and moved to Swan Quarter. They were blessed with three children, Linda, Randy, and Robbie. As the children grew up, Ann became more involved in church and civic affairs like Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the American Heart Association. They moved to Belhaven in 1952 and started a tire and recapping business that was a successful enterprise.

She went back to school in 1971 at Beaufort County Technical Institute to become a laboratory technician and worked at Beaufort County Hospital and Pitt County Health Department. After that, she went to work with Mutual of Omaha Insurance where she was retiring with 35 years of service this year.

Surviving are her three children; Linda Rouse Sharp of Kill Devil Hills, Randy Rouse and his wife Cherry of Pantego, and Robbie Rouse and his wife Jane of Washington; seven grandchildren – Sarah Sharp Prior, Christopher Rouse and wife Kelly, Bradley Rouse and wife Rachel, Gregory Rouse, Kathleen Rouse, MacKenzie Rouse, and Lauren Rouse: four great-grandchildren – Luke Rouse, Julia Rouse, Ryan Rouse, and Annabelle Rouse: a sister-in-law, Ann Latham of Belhaven; and half-brother Jonathan Latham of Washington.

For the last 11 years, Ann has been an active member with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Washington and it has greatly added to her life.

Ann passed away on Sept. 14, 2011. Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church Social Hall, Washington, with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary.
