Press Release:

WASHINGTON, NC     The Beau-Fitt program will be wrapping up for the semester with a final demonstration at Beaufort County Community College on May 6 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Building 4, Room 102.

    H. Boyd Overman Jr., PT DPT from Carolina Physical Therapy, will talk about how cybertechnology, smart phones, laptops and desktops hurt and help our bodies and what we can do. Mandie Boahn from Raised in the Barn Farm will talk about good foods and opportunities for wellness.

Food samples will be given away along with a free raffle for two food baskets from Raised in the Barn Farm. This health and wellness session is split into two 30-minute sections and open to the public, along with staff, faculty and students. Please feel free to attend one or both parts of the session. Participants are welcomed to bring your own lunch and eat during this time.

The last Beau-Fitt session featured a healthy cooking demonstration by Colleen Obrien, dietician, and Artemus Brower, chef from Vidant Beaufort Hospital. During the cooking demonstration they will gave out small samples. A yoga stretching session was led by Lilly Jones, yoga instructor from Fitness Unlimited.

The yearlong program was made possible by a $25,000 grant from MDC. Public monthly drop-in sessions have encouraged participants to learn better ways to eat healthy and to incorporate exercise into their lives. Some program participants were pre-screen and will be screened at the end to document health outcomes of the program. The program works in tandem with BCCC's IMFITT one-mile fitness trail, which is also open to the public and features exercise equipment along the way. It was funded by a grant from KB Reynolds and MDC.
