TMc: Southern White History | Eastern North Carolina Now

Federal Liberals are incapable of Nation Building. Today, one in four Americans in all states would vote to secede from the USA.

    Reference Link: Reuters.com

Liberals had 17 years after the Civil War/ War of Independence to install a Great Society but started removing troops in 1877 leaving bankrupt State treasuries, Carpet Baggers owning foreclosed property and a CSA population that experienced 500,000 deaths; 300,000 wounded; 200,000 widows and 500,000 orphans. Veterans could not vote or hold office and were forced to pay 4 years of back taxes usually resulting in foreclosed property. Mississippi was the richest state and remains the poorest today. As Federal Troop began leaving in 1877, Segregationist gained control.

There was plenty of land in the South and White Immigrants were encouraged to settle towns like Cullman, Alabama. White Yankee vets immigrated to towns like Forsyth, Georgia and named streets after North and South Generals. The demographics changed from 50/50 W&B to 70/30. The majority began passing new laws.

It is easier to conquer countries than to deal with conquered people and as usual the Federal Government had no plans leaving Southern Whites to create their own Great Society which was not great for all. Separate but Equal never happened.

Conclusion: Reconstruction (1866 to 1877) was not a pleasant time for anyone. I grew up in the segregated South and times were great for me but not so for everyone. As the Great Society was implemented, and the Real Estate folks found numerous ways to "Block Bust" stable areas and create the suburbs of today.

I sent a copy of this article to a friend for critique and enjoyed a lengthy eConversation.

    Friend:

I spent an hour or two at the Spout Springs library browsing various books. I did a quick speed read of the biography of Bedford Forrest. I know you are not prone to long books but this is a good read.

Forrest was no saint and certainly not a role model for anything other than tactician for military battle. He was uneducated and prone to abusive treatment of not only his own men but the enemy. He probably should have been tried as a war criminal for the Fort Pillow incident even if he did not participate. The buck stops with the leader and he did nothing to punish those responsible for the massacre. It is a very interesting book written by one of his former troopers in 1879 or so. It is somewhat sympathetic to Forrest but also shows some of his excesses in temperament and abusiveness.

I am searching for the alternative view book to provide me some perspective.

I think his redeeming grace is his life after the civil war when he became a more Christian man and faced his excesses and tried to make amends for his former beliefs. I think the story of Forrest is best contained in one paragraph from the book from an account of one of his officers. It is a quote shortly before his death and reveals his redemption and conversion.
"Major, I am not the same man you were with so long and knew so well. I hope I am a better man now than then. I have been and am trying to lead another kind of life. Mary has been praying for me night and day for all these years and I feel now that through her prayers my life has been spared and I have passed safely through so many dangers" Nathan Bedford Forrest shortly before his death.     TMc:

I watched Netflix about the Powerline blackout in 1977 New York and the burning and looting. The liberals have no ideas for solving the racial problems.

    Friend:

The purpose of reconstruction was nothing more than pillage of the south. I doubt that there was any intent to nation build the south into anything other than a place for riches and plunder. The Great Society was nothing more than a pandering for votes disguised as a social program.

The proof statement for me was the release and freedom of slaves who had no education or idea about liberty and not capable of forming a society based on a concept they never understood, FREEDOM.

The slaves eventually formed a society while still enduring the Jim Crow laws of the south and the Ghettos of the north. Then in 1965 we decided to recapture them into the Government protection plan. It never worked with the Indians and did not work with the blacks. The difficulty of adapting to life after captivity is illustrated with animals raised in captivity then released. I am not comparing the slaves to animals but it is illustrative that survival depends on coping skills in the environment in which one exist.

Most carnivores bred in captivity and released back into the wild fail to cope and die, according to a study published on Monday

We now have a new generation of Millennial and Baby Boomers who are neither prepared or life in a real world without government assistance. The next big battle will be the eventual fail of the Social Security system when most conservative baby boomers will lash back at the failure of their "Earned Benefits."

    TMc:

I think separate but equal would have worked like Northern Ireland today. Integration with bussing failed and destroyed the inner cities also.

    Friend:

I think integration will work if we finally realize that using race, ethnicity, wealth and country of origin is nothing more than a political trick to get votes.

    TMc:

Integration will not work because we are all like the skin we are in. Blacks like being black, etc. Someday the Irish Catholics and Scot Protestants will tear down their Belfast walls but not in my lifetime. Same goes for Sunni and Shiite... Jews and Arabs...

    Friend:

But I though you said it worked in South America.

It will work as long as we don't dwell on appearance. I see many mixed race relationships in my two bars (Jeffrey's and Jacks). Many of the millennial generation don't have the Northern / Southern bias or the color bias.

My dad's sister sneered about him marrying a "Damn Italian." Segregation based on commonalities is not the problem; segregation for the purpose of creating divisions is where our problem lies. It was formerly only the Southern Conservatives that pushed the separation, now it is the elite liberals who use it. We are only a pawn in the game according to Bob Dylan 1962

I think you and I may be stuck in our inflexible biases. I lost most of my color bias in Vietnam and am still working on the embedded regional biases. My family survived Catholic and Southern Baptist differences by common commitment to family first.

    TMc:

I have greatly modified my views over the last 50 years and have no problem with Jews or Catholics or Suburban Afro-Americans. Vietnam modified many opinions especially about our Military Industrial Complex but that is a different subject.

South America is a good reference but for some reason Spanish folks are not as prejudiced as Northern Europeans. For some reason the Spanish Basques are unhappy. French Canadians are unhappy. Turkish Kurds are unhappy.

I have wondered for a long time about why the European countries have not merged languages and completely integrated across borders.

Gone to Home Depot. Good conversation. Later.
