A Remembrance | Eastern NC Now

And then, monstrous violence inconceivable, unimagined, unholy

ENCNow
Restless leaves blowing against a crystalline blue sky

A melancholy whisper rises above, shifting, moaning, searching

Looking for life that once was.

A life of childhood laughter, embracing the future;

The gift of the mundane; work, school, play, responsibility

Embracing the normalcy of walking out the door to begin the day,

Perhaps whistling, perhaps humming on the way to work.

The remembered kiss or the hurried hug

What to do about dinner that evening and weekend plans

Kids to the park, play dates, celebrating beautiful autumn days

The humdrum of the every day, never questioned, unexamined.

And then, monstrous violence inconceivable, unimagined, unholy

The sky erupts into molten ash, its lava the fury of death.

A ghastly ghost presides as anguish, desolation poisons the soul

Leaving behind its glaring, gruesome aftermath.

And the leaves solemnly settle to earth to cover the graves of those lost.

Nice poem of a difficult day, the impetus for a more difficult decade, with decades difficult as time yet unfolds.
