    The war with France in 1946 and a final war with Cambodia in 1978 are like book ends to 30 years of conflict. Maybe West Point studies this one.

    After eight years of fighting, the Viet Minh controlled much of Vietnam and neighboring Laos. On 7 May 1954, after a 57-day siege, more than 10, 000 starving French troops surrendered to the Viet Minh at Dien Bien Phu.
