Students Receive Spring Scholarships Through BCCC Foundation | Eastern North Carolina Now

    The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the spring 2019 semester. The BCCC Foundation has awarded over $150,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year. The BCCC Foundation-Nutrien 26th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament for Scholarships will take place on Friday, May 3 at Cypress Landing Golf Club. Registration is currently open for summer and fall classes.

    Cecelia Angelica Claudio, 26, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The Washington resident is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing and plans to get a doctorate degree. The daughter of Margarita Claudio of Aurora, she attended Southside High School and holds an Associate in General Education. She currently works at Vidant Medical Center as a care partner/nurse aide II.

    Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.

    Vontasia Collins, 18, received the Tayloe's Hospital Pharmacy Scholarship. She is part of the nursing program and plans to work in pediatrics. The daughter of Melvin and Contessa Collins of Washington, she attended Washington High School. The Washington resident currently works as a crew member at Little Caesar's, and she is a certified nurse aide.

    Tayloe's Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to current or former employees of Tayloe's Hospital Pharmacy.

    Grace Lassiter, 18, received the Bobby Andrews and the Vidant Beaufort Scholarships. She is the daughter of Renee Asby and Billy Lassiter. The Washington resident attended Washington High School. Lassiter is a nursing student and currently works as a server at Ribeyes and a cashier at Food Lion.

    Established in 2000 in honor of Bobby Andrews and his long career in coaching women's and girls' softball, the scholarships are made available to women who have played in the Washington Girls' Softball League, and are planning to attend BCCC.

    The Vidant Beaufort Health Scholarship is available to qualified students from nursing, MLT, nursing assistant, phlebotomy and any other curriculum or continuing education medical-related field.

    Jessi Mizelle, 18, received the Foundation General Event Scholarship. The Ahoskie resident is working on her pre-nursing coursework before she gets her Associate Degree in Nursing. She attended Bertie Early College High School, and plans to work as a nurse.





    Dylan Respess, 19, is part of the licensed nurse practitioner (LPN) program. He is the son of Sherri Respess of Washington and John Respess of Plymouth, and he attended Northside High School. The Washington resident plans to obtain an Associate Degree in Nursing.

    Established in 1998 in memory of Harold Alton Lane, Jr., and in honor of Constance Lane Howard, by their parents Harold Lane, Sr. and his wife Louise, this endowment provides annual scholarships to one or more students in the nursing and or an associate degree program.

    Breanna Robinson, 27, received the Grey & Jarls Bowers Scholarship. Robinson is part of the nursing program. She is the granddaughter of Donna Renwick, and she attended Colonie Central High School in Albany, N.Y. The Pantego resident plans to become a family nurse practitioner. She currently works at Subway as a store manager.

    Grey Worley and Jarl E. Bowers provided for this endowment in their wills. Grey Bowers was a home economics teacher and Jarl Bowers was a successful businessman and community leader. The Bowers believed deeply in the value of education as well as the mission of BCCC, and bequeathed this endowment in 2008 to help students demonstrating need and enrolled in a curriculum program at BCCC.

    Darian Stoica, 22, is the daughter of Mindy and Alex Stoica of Greenville. She is working on an Associate in Arts, and she plans to transfer to East Carolina University to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Management. The Grimesland resident attended D.H. Conley High School and holds an Associate in Applied Science in Medical Office Administration. She currently at works at BCCC as assistant to admissions.

    Founded in 2001, the Louse R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va., and attended Bentley Business College, Gassaway Business College, and, later in life, Patrick Henry Community College and Averett College. She studied interior design, architecture and art. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings and poetry. The Louise R. Lester Foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

    Brittany Wiggins, 21, received the Dorothy & Allen Scholarship. The Vanceboro resident is part of the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses program and plans to pursue a master's degree or a doctorate after graduating from East Carolina University. The daughter of James and Lori Wiggins of Vanceboro, she attended West Craven High School.

    Sam Taylor established this scholarship in memory of his parents, Dorothy and Allen Taylor. Scholarships are given to second year nursing RN students who are Beaufort County natives who intent to stay and work in Beaufort County and plan to continue their education at an accredit university towards a BS degree.Students must demonstrate financial need.
