Canada Election: Quebec premier endorses Conservatives | Eastern NC Now

big boost to ousting Trudeau's Liberal government

ENCNow

Canada's Conservatives already ahead in the polls and surging for the Sept. 20 early parliamentary election, have received a major boost in the endorsement by the premier of Canada's second most populous province, Quebec.  Speaking of Conservative leader Erin O'Toole, popular Quebec premier Francois Legault declared "For the Quebec nation, Mr. O'Toole's approach is a good one" and warned that victory for any other party could be "dangerous" for provincial autonomy.  Legault's Quebec nationalists dominate politics in Quebec.

Under Legault, Quebec's nationalists have dialed back their demand for independence and now pursue greater provincial autonomy from the federal government, a goal also sought by many in western Canada who organized the Wexit (western exit) movement that has now also dialed back their demands to greater provincial autonomy.

The embrace by the Quebec nationalists offers the Conservatives a way forward if they emerge as the largest party but short of a majority, as current polls indicate may happen.  This could allow formation of a majority coalition or in the alternative, the outside support to allow a minority Conservative government to function.
