Battle between fishermen and wind industy leads to standoff at sea | Eastern NC Now

commercial fisherman blocks wind survery boat that was destroying his equipment

ENCNow

The battle between the Climate Industrial Complex, in this case, Big Wind, and the commercial fishing industry has resulted in a standoff at sea in Maryland waters.  Commercial fisherman Jimmy Hahn went out to check on his conch pots in well established fishing grounds off of Maryland, which were appropriately marked, and found a survey boat from the US Wind company tearing through his pots, having already destroyed some.  Hahn contacted the survey vessel by radio, pointed out that it was in marked fishing grounds, and demanded it stop.  When the survey vessel failed to do so, Hahn placed his own smaller boat directly in its path as it was heading for more of his pots.  Finally, the US Wind survey vessel backed off..

US WInd has since apologized and offered to pay for the destroyed pots, but Hahn says with only a three month season., and the time to acquire new pots, he has also lost most of his catch for the year, and he is also demanding payment for that.

This incident has led Maryland commercial fishermen to become vocal in warning that if a wind turbine development is built in their fishing grounds, then it will destroy their industry and eliminate the supply of fresh local seafood to much of Maryland.  The eastern shore of Maryland's Republican congressman is working with the fishermen to avoid that outcome.

Sadly, this battle is likely coming to North Carolina soon, thanks to RINO legislative leaders Tim Moore and Phil Berger caving in on Roy Cooper's Green New Deal, HB951 and betraying the people of our state.  Our commercial fishermen had better get geared up for battle.  Roy Cooper has already expressed his love for very expensive offshore wind and HB951 puts his appointees in the drivers seat.

Let us keep our fresh local seafood and get our electricity from cheaper and more reliable sources like gas, nuclear, and coal.

(On a side note, while I knew that conch is a major seafood enjoyed in the Bahamas and Caribbean, I was unaware that we had conch fisheries in US waters).
