Cooper pushes expensive and environmentally damaging offshore wind power | Eastern NC Now

was at meeting in Wilmington yesterday to promote offshore wind

ENCNow

North Carolina Gautleiter. . . err . . . Governor Roy Cooper spoke to a meeting of supporters of offshore wind turbines yesterday in Wilmington and threw his backing behind putting wind turbines on North Carolina's coasts.  Offshore wind, which is in essence industrializing our oceans, is both environmentally damaging and a very expensive way to make electricity, with that added expense showing up in customer's electric bills.

A good example of the added cost of offshore wind was reported last year by the New York Daily News.  The Long Island Power Authority had just signed a contract for wind power from the newly constructed, and much subsidized by the taxpayers, South Fork Wind Project, just off the coast of Long Island.  The wholesale contract price that the power authority was paying the wind turbine owners was four and an half times the wholesale price they were paying to conventional power sources.  This, of course, gets passed on to consumers in their electric bills.

The environmental damage to birds and marine life is also huge, with much documentation around the world on the decimation of sea bird populations by these giant bird cuisinarts.  Fishing grounds are also being destroyed, and other marine life from crabs to whales also being adversely effected.  Coastal tourism is also negatively impacted.

The Spectator Australia (an affiliate of the UK's Spectator, the world's oldest news magazine, first published in 1828) recently ran an article on the damage that offshore wind turbines do to the environment, and it is a  warning North Carolina should heed: https://www.spectator.com.au/2021/12/whirling-triffids-are-now-cluttering-our-coastlines/

One of the issues the Spectator points out is the destruction of offshore turbines by typhoons (which in our hemisphere would be called hurricanes) focusing on the environmental impact of the wreckage of destroyed turbines.  Another issue is that if those turbines destroyed are necessary to carry electric baseload because the power companies have decommissioned coal power plants, then it may be many months before power can be restored to significant parts of the state.

Offshore wind is a looming disaster for our state, which Roy Cooper is all too willing to embrace to virtue signal to the green left.  Sadly the RINOs in leadership in the NC General Assembly, Speaker Tim Moore and Senate President Phil Berger have also embraced this leftwing nonsense by pushing through NC's Green New Deal, HB951 which empowers Cooper's appointees to move forward on replacing "fossil fuels" with expensive and unreliable wind and solar.
