Cong. Greg Murphy mails campaign postcard at taxpayers expense | Eastern NC Now

primary campaign piece printed and mailed by abusing Congressional franking privelege

ENCNow

Congress has a special provision for free mail on government business called franking. The Congressman's signature substitutes for a postage stamp.  Both printing and postage costs of "franked" mail is borne by the taxpayers.  It is NOT supposed to be used for political campaigning. Typically, "franked" mail is things like letters responding to constituents, periodic Congressional newsletters and the like.

However, a mail piece from Congressman Greg Murphy that hit today grossly abused the franking system to print and mail what is a thinly disguised political campaign mailing to try to boost himself in the Republican primary.  Instead of something like a newsletter, it is a slick campaign-designed postcard intended to boost him in the primary.  It is mailed less than two months from the primary election date.  The postcard bears Murphy's signature as postage and it even states that it is paid for by the government (taxpayers) not Murphy's campaign committee.

Murphy's campaign committee should be compelled to reimburse the taxpayers for this abuse of office.  And primary voters should look to one of the other GOP candidates to replace him.

I got one of those Murphy postcards in todays mail. It was clearly political, not government business. Monkey business more likely. I went back and looked for who paid for it, and it clearly says it is paid for by the taxpayers, not Murphy's campaign committee. There is Murphy's signature for postage. That is just wrong. Murphy is off of my list of candidates to consider. I will probably go with Cowden who seems to have the most substance of the challengers. If a politician wants to become a swamp rat and abuse the taxpayers this way, it is time to change them for someone else.
