While Tamika Walker Kelly, President of the state chapter of the national teacher's union, wants us to believe that "'Learning loss' is a false construct", the data shows otherwise. Yikes.

North Carolina's Department of Public Instruction has released a new report that shows incredible learning loss for K-12 public school students compared to pre-pandemic levels. In the words of one NC Board of Education member, "when we first got a look at this material, we felt like crying."

It makes sense to get emotional when we're talking about the future of our children - and, through them, our state. We also need to talk about solutions.

"Our biggest takeaway is that the majority of students need regular interaction and direct personal engagement with their principals, their teachers, and their peers," said Dr. Jeni Corn, director of research and evaluation for DPI's Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration.

Dr. Terry Stoops, director of the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation said kids also need "high-dosage tutoring" to gain ground. "State lawmakers should approve an education savings account program that allows families to access tutoring services from public, private, and nonprofit entities," he said.

Kids from every background should have access to a great education - not just kids whose families can afford something "different."

When a child is in the right learning environment, the sky's the limit.

Standing between children and opportunity is an extreme injustice.

And that's why season 2 of Extreme Injustice will focus on learning loss and the poor fiscal management of education. It's launching today, April 4 - so be sure to subscribe here or wherever you listen.
