RINOs take aim at GOP appellate court primaries | Eastern North Carolina Now

Supreme Court and Court of Appeals

ENCNow

Republican nominations for our state appellate courts - the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals - have become a battleground between conservatives and the establishment.  Primary voters need to pay attention.

Last election, in 2020, it was the establishment providing the nominees for the two at large Supreme Court seats won by the GOP.  There was not a primary for either.  In one, Phil Berger, Jr. was thought to have the name recognition and money that he could not be beaten in a primary.  Berger's father is state Senate leader, who was once a conservative stalwart but has become a useful idiot for the left in recent years.  For the other seat, the establishment's candidate was Tamara Barringer, who had a rather liberal voting record as a state Senator.  Conservative Court of Appeals Judge April Wood was gearing up to primary Barringer, but was pressured by GOP Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby to "wait until next time".  She did.

Now conservative April Wood is running for a Supreme Court nomination and Paul Newby has produced his own primary candidate, Trey Allen, who has never been a judge.  Allen's campaign is being run by major RINO political consultant Paul Shumaker, who is also consultant for Thom Tillis, Richard Burr, and Pat McCrory.

But that is not the only court race at stake in the primary.  Conservative Court of Appeals Judge Donna Stroud is being challenged in the primary by establishment candidate Beth Freshwater-Smith.  RINO Shumaker is also Freshwater-Smith's consultant.

There is a second Court of Appeals GOP primary for a seat now held by a Democrat, between Micheal Strading and Charlton Allen.  While both say they are conservative and both have judicial experience, Shumaker is Strading's consultant which is a tip off.

Establishment donors are heavily involved in trying to make our judiciary less conservative.  They are backing the establishment candidates.  So, apparently, are the "green energy" special interests, who have been reeling from a series of supreme court rulings against them in courts around the world.  That also ties in to Shumaker, who receives a very large paycheck to represent their interests in North Carolina from green energy interests with ties to George Soros.

Conservative voters should avoid Shumaker candidates like the plague, whether it is Pat McCrory, Trey Allen, or Beth Freshwater-Smith.

Freshwater-Smith claimed today at the 3rd District GOP convention that she has been asked to run by one or more Republicans on the Supreme Court. Since her opponent Judge Donna Stroud was appointed Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals by Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby, that would clearly not be Newby. Stroud is endorsed by former GOP Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Martin, so it would not be him. That leaves Justice Phil Berger, Jr., whose father is increasingly liberal as Senate President and Justice Tamara Barringer who had a rather liberal voting record as a state senator.

April Wood and Donna Stroud are solid conservative strict constructionist judges and deserve our votes. They have proven conservative records.
