Italian right continues surge in polls for Sept. 25 election | Eastern NC Now

2/3rds supermajority in sight

ENCNow

Italy's right wing coalition, now led by Senator Giorgia Meloni's ultra-conservative Brothers of Italy party, continues it's surge in the polls, running twenty points ahead of the center-left block.  It is in sight of a 2/3rds supermajority which would allow it to amend the Constitution.  The block also includes Matteo Salvini's populist / nationalist Lega party, and the traditional conservative Forza Italia of former Prime Minister Berlusconi.

All three parties take a very hard line on stopping illegal immigration into Italy, and are sovereigntists in opposing EU overreach.  They have suggested restoring a national currency and abandoning the Euro.

They are right lipped about plans to deal with the country's presidency.  The current president connived with the EU to break up Italy's last right wing government and has worked to prevent new elections that would have brought the right back to power.  Some have suggested making the president elected by the people instead of the parliament, while others advocate restoration of the monarchy under the House of Savoy.
