Social Democrat prime minister resigns

ENCNow

With almost all votes counted and nothing likely to change, Sweden's Social Democrat prime minister has conceded defeat by the right and resigned.  The late count slightly increased the four party conservative coalition's majority from one seat to three seats. It will hold 176 of parliament's 349 seats.

The populist / nationalist anti-immigration Sweden Democrats have emerged as the largest party in the coalition and the second largest in the country.  They campaigned on the slogan "Make Sweden Safe Again", calling for longer imprisonment of criminals, who are mostly migrants, and more deportation of those in the country illegally.  One of the party leaders posted a video of a moving train in the party colors and with the party symbol with an announcer saying "Welcome to the Repatriation Express.  Next stop Kabul. You have a one way ticket."

On a range of issues the four party coalition will probably also have support from the Center Party, which represents rural interests, having originally been named the Farmers League, which won 24 seats.  The Center Party has sometimes joined center-right coalition governments but in the last parliament provided support for the Social Democrats from outside the government.  In addition to rural issues, the party stresses reducing the size and scope of government, free enterprise, equality of the sexes, and voluntary environmentalism.
