Leftwing Danish government collapses over Covid overreach, new election called | Eastern NC Now

Social Democrat prime minister resigns after coalition partner leaves

ENCNow

A new prospect for a conservative gain over the left or center in Europe has suddenly emerged as Denmark's Social Democrat led government has collapsed.  Their coalition partner the Social Liberals withdrew from the coalition and called for a vote of no confidence after fall out from the government's Covid overreach.  The Social Democrat prime minister then resigned and the Queen called a snap parliamentary election.

A new Danish party led by hardline former Immigration Minister Inger Stojberg, the Denmark Democrats is polling at almost ten percent in the polls, and together with the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Danish Peoples Party has called for deportation of 50,000 illegal aliens from the country.

Denmark already has some of the toughest immigration laws in western Europe, a legacy of the Danish Peoples Party having served in a previous center-right coalition government.  During the previous big influx of Middle Eastern migrants into Europe, Denmark closed its borders with Germany to keep them out and reduced welfare to asylum seekers to make the country less attractive to them.

The Social Democrats are down in the polls due to their Covid overreach, but the election is expected to be close with at least 13 parties winning seats in parliament.

The right has in the last month ousted left wing national governments in Sweden and Italy and a centrist government in Bulgaria, while populist conservatives made big gains in local elections in the Czech Republic.
