Severe Storm Warning | Eastern North Carolina Now

For Immediate Release:

The beauty of living in Eastern North Carolina is that we can go from Winter Weather Advisory to Possible Severe Storm spring like weather in less than six days.

I have enclosed the latest NWS weather briefing and have discussed the weather with the forecasters concerning the wind timing and storm arrival time frame. Unless something changes the main portion of the storm should arrive as listed around 1:00am Thursday Morning (tonight). There is the distinct possibility that we will see some wind gust exceed 55mph during the frontal passage. Wind gust this afternoon should not exceed 35 to 40mph. The winds will dissipate rapidly after the frontal passage and should not create a significant threat to travel after 6:00am tomorrow morning.

This frontal system has a history of producing Tornadoes and Severe Weather even at night. We should stay vigilant and weather aware.

County Employees Notes: Employees working out of the office should be reminded to be aware of their surrounding and have a "safe shelter plan" should a tornado or severe storm approach them. If the storms arrive impact Beaufort County employees should be reminded to use caution when driving to work as tree debris or power lines could be laying across roadways. The first order of business when arriving at work should be to check the workplace for any damages and report the damages according to your agencies policies to the Public Works Directors office.

First Responder Safety Notes: High Winds equal caution when crossing bridges with fire and ems equipment. Safety checks, equipment inventory and servicing of tree removal equipment would be appropriate. Downed power lines and "Widow Maker" tree limbs/tree tops are just a two of the pearls we should stay aware of while operating equipment following wind events.

Hopefully this storm will pass with minimal impact inside Beaufort County. Thank You for your assistance and preparation for disasters can and will save lives. We will forward any updates we receive concerning this frontal system.
