Swiss conservatives to push strict immigration control thru nat'l referendum | Eastern NC Now

will use environment and potential overpopulation to pull liberal votes

ENCNow

Switzerland's largest political party, the staunchly conservative Swiss Peoples Party, will be pushing a national referendum to implement strict immigration controls.  The referendum question will cite protecting the environment and avoiding overpopulation as part of the basis for adoption.

Swiss law, like the initiative and referendum provisions of some US states, allows referendum questions to be placed on the ballot by petition, and then if the voters cast a majority of votes for it, the provision becomes law.  The party leadership will be meeting next week in Thurgau to finalize the referendum which has the working title "Initiative for Sustainability" and will direct the national government to abandon international treaties if necessary to put a brake on migration.

Switzerland has already blocked access to migrants trying to enter from Italy.  It has found that migrants from Africa have a 34% welfare usage rate.

The Swiss Peoples Party has always taken a hard line on immigration.  Some election cycles back, they were criticized for an election poster showing two white sheep kicking a black sheep off of a map of Switzerland.
