Social Democrats lose vote share as right continues to surge

ENCNow

Austrian voters are moving to the right, as demonstrated in both polls and in regional elections in Austria's provinces.  A couple of months ago, it was a big surge by the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Freedom Party at the expense of the traditional conservative Austrian Peoples Party in the province of Lower Austria.  Now it is a surge by the Freedom Party and the Peoples Party at the expense of the Social Democrats in the province of Carinthia.

In Carinthia, the previously ruling Social Democrats suffered big losses, falling from 47.9% of the vote in the previous election to 38.9% this election.   The Social Democrats won 15 of the 36 seats, with the Freedom Party second with 9 seats, followed by the Peoples Party with 7.  The other 5 seats were won by a provincial party that does not exist outside the province, the Team Carinthia, a populist regionalist party that takes classical liberal positions in supporting low taxes and small government   The leftwing Green Party and the liberal pro-EU NEOS party failed to win any seats.

This election confirms repeated polls showing that the Freedom Party is Austria's most popular political party nationally, cemented by its record as the only party that stood strong for citizens rights against government Covid overreach and its very strong stand against illegal immigration.
