Leftwing Democrat NC House member switches to GOP | Eastern NC Now

gives veto proof majority, but has she changed her leftwing policy positions?

ENCNow

Leftwing Democrat Tricia Cotham of Mecklenburg County is switching to the Republican Party.  She has a long very liberal voting record, and there is nothing to indiciate that will change.  She will, however, become a member of the Republican caucus, where she can expound on her liberal ideas but technically create a veto proof Republican legsialture.

One remembers former Rep. Paul Tine who represented part of Beaufort County switching to independent and joining the Republican caucus, but not changing his liberal voting havits in the legislature.  He was defeated for reelection by a genuine Republican.  Back when Tine last ran as a Democrat, Mrs. Frnakie Waters contributed to him against a Republican opponent, at the time her husband was running as a Republican for county commission, a good example of how Waters did not change his political stripes when he nominally changed his party affiliation.
