NYC schools to return to phonics-based reading curriculum | Eastern NC Now

New York City schools have just joined a growing national trend in education to return to teaching reading through a phonics- based curriculum, something that had worked fine for many years until largely junked twenty years ago and replaced with a sight-reading strategy that has failed schoolchildren.

New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks called the teaching methods for reading over the last twenty years "fundamentally flawed" and said that it was the school systems fault that children could not read.  "This is the beginning of a massive turnaround" he declared.

The education establishment and the major textbook / curriculum companies have pushed failed new education strategies over the last few decades that have dumbed down students in our schools.  The "New Math" was a horrendous failute from the 1960s, reflected more recently in the flailing "Common Core" math of today.  Phonics worked for years to teach reading, and the new strategies have been failures for two decades yet largely remained in place.

All of which raises the question; what reading strategy is being taught in Beaufort County Schools?  Is it tainted with Common Core as well?
