Greek conservatives win landslide in second round election | Eastern NC Now

Greece's governing traditional conservative New Democracy Party, running on a platform of cracking down hard on illegal immigration, has won an absolute majority in the second round of Greece's parliamentary election.  New Democracy has won 158 seats in the 300 seat parliament, a gain of 12. ,meaning they will be able to govern alone this term without need of a coalition.

Other parties of the right winning seats were the populist nationalist Greek Solution Party which won 12 seats, the religious and Eurosceptic conservative  Democratic Patriotic Movement Victory, which won 10 seats, and the far right Spatans which won 12 seats, entering parliament for the first time.

The major parties of the left all lost seats, the far left Syriza winning 48 seats, a loss of 23, the center left Panhellenic Socialist Movement winning 32, a loss of 9, and the Communists winning 20, a loss of 6.   However, the left wing populist nationalist Course of Freedom Party, which is strongly Eurosceptic and sovereigntist, won 8 seats, entering parliament for the first time.

Overall, the Greek right won 192 seats and the Greek left 108.
