"Sound of Freedom," starring actor Jim Caviezel, is expected to top $40 million in total ticket sales, according to the latest projections from Angel Studios.

The film, an eye-opening true story that explores the depths of human trafficking and child sex trafficking around the world, opened on July 4th and quickly shot to the top of the box office. According to a press release from Angel Studios, the momentum did not stop there.

"As with our July 4th numbers, today's numbers exceed our expectations, and we're going to continue this momentum. SOUND of FREEDOM has taken on a life of its own. We're getting messages from all over the country telling us about packed theaters, sold-out theaters, and spontaneous standing ovations for the film in numerous locations. Seeing this film has become a must thanks to incredible word-of-mouth," Brandon Purdie, Head of Theatrical Distribution at Angel Studios, said in Sunday's press release.

"We're deeply grateful to AMC, Cinemark, Regal, and all our theater partners-and their hard-working theater staff members-for working with us to accommodate the surging demand for this film and having the courage to release SOUND OF FREEDOM during the busiest movie season of the year," he continued.

According to the release, the film is showing in 2,850 theaters and is projected to bring in nearly $20 million for the weekend - bringing the total box office haul to an estimated $40 million.

Box Office Mojo offered similar numbers, showing the domestic earnings for "Sound of Freedom" as just over $18 million for the weekend and slightly more than $40 million in total.

Ratings site Rotten Tomatoes showed strong numbers as well, with a 76% tomato-meter from critics and a 99% audience score.

The film follows the harrowing true story of a federal agent who, after rescuing a boy who was being trafficked, quits his job in order to track down and rescue the boy's sister in South America.
