Republicans flip Louisiana governorship in jungle primary | Eastern NC Now

no runoff needed

ENCNow

Louisiana has a new Republican governor, Jeff Landry, to replace current Democrat governor John Bell Edwards.  Landry is currently state Attorney General and a former Congressman where he had a very conservative voting record.

Under Louisiana's unusual election system, called a jungle primary, all candidates of all parties compete in the same primary, held yesterday, with the top two going to a runoff in November if no one gets over 50%.  These races usually go to runoffs, but Landry won 52% earning victory without a runoff.

Kentucky is the other state with a governor's election this year, where a Democrat incumbent faces the state's Republican Attorney General in a more traditional type of election.
